Call me crazy, but I think there are starting to be signs that marijuana might actually be legalized within my lifetime.

As anyone who actually smokes pot can tell you, there’s a lot of misinformation out there about marijuana. But as more and more people get educated about its benefits as a medical treatment, the general public is slooowly starting to be more open to looking at pot in a rational way.

I wish I had a ton of money; I’d pay for an intense national advertising campaign, on TV, radio, billboards, you name it. It would just be about comparing pot to alcohol, and showing all the statistics about how each one effects the human body, and also the ’social costs’ of each one. Each of their effects on the crime rate, health care costs, vehicular homicide, the teen death rate, tax dollars spent, etc. That’s all. Just the facts. Over, and over, and over… the same way that the B.S. propaganda about marijuana is shoved down the public’s throat over, and over and over…

Personally, I think there’s some evidence that the general public is getting tired of the debate about pot and they don’t really care as much as they used to about whether or not it’s legal or illegal. Look at the whole Michael Phelps fiasco. Except for Kellogg’s none of Phelps’ other sponsors fired him, because it’s just getting to be not that big a deal anymore. Except for Kellogg’s, and maybe Fox News, nobody really seemed to give a damn that the guy had a few bong hits. Which is good.

But, I’m not stupid. I know it’s a long stretch between public opinion slowly changing and actual policy change in Washington. Politicians, whether they’re Democrats or Republicans, are WAY too conservative to be early adopters in any area. But organizations like the Drug Policy Alliance Network are working on changing the government’s drug policies, by fighting the status quo with facts – not propaganda.

The ACLU is calling the criminalization of marijuana the equivalent of alcohol prohibition in the 1920s.

How to pass a drug test might actually become a moot point in our lifetime, now that the ACLU is getting involved in the debate. They’re calling the criminalization of marijuana the equivalent of alcohol prohibition in the 1920s, and they point out the fact that marijuana laws disproportionately affect minorities.

This story broke in my home town of Seattle, which is known for its progressive laws and attitudes. The state ACLU is partnering with a guy name Rick Steves from that area. In case you’ve never heard of Rick Steves, he’s a travel writer who has had his own TV show on PBS for years, among other things. Rick has publicly stated that he smokes pot whenever he’s in Europe (where it’s legal in many places), and now he’s appearing in some informational programs that the Washington state ACLU chapter hopes to air on TV stations and the Internet.

But to me, the big news is that the Washington state ACLU chapter received its funding for this project from the national ACLU organization. So, they’re definitely doing more than just sticking a toe in the water on this issue, and hopefully we’ll see other state chapters launch similar projects. Since the ACLU’s mission is to uphold The Bill of Rights, I’m not sure where this fits in with that. All I know is that The Bill of Rights is the reason why I can legally tell people how to pass a drug test. So, thank you ACLU!

That said, there are actually a lot of other reasons why it should be legalized (and I’m not just talking about medical marijuana either). This guy has written about the best laid out argument for legalizing marijuana that I’ve seen in a long time. You’ve probably already heard most of the points he makes, but I like the way he lays it out, and some of the comments are really good too. Read it and memorize it for the next time you’re discussing marijuana legalization with a right-wing fear monger. Get great free widgets at &amp;amp;lt;a href=&quot;http://www.widgetbox.com&quot;&amp;amp;gt;Widgetbox&amp;amp;lt;/a&amp;amp;gt;!
