DOT drug tests really aren’t different than any other kind of drug test. I hear from a fair number of people who have to take them, worried that they’re harder to pass. But the only thing that makes them different is the fact that the requirements for a DOT drug test are set at the federal level.
What Is A DOT Drug Test?
For those who may not know, DOT stands for ‘Department of Transportation’. People who have to take a DOT drug test include anyone who drives a large truck or bus for a living, and any workers who are remotely involved with those vehicles – which is basically anyone in the same company.
A federal agency called the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has about a hundred pages of regulations that both employers and labs have to follow when administering DOT drug tests. But fortunately, most of those regulations simply cover the details about the paperwork that has to be done. The drug tests themselves are basically carried out just like they are for any other employer. Which doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take them seriously – it just means that you don’t have any extra cause for concern just because you’re taking a DOT drug test as opposed to any other kind.
Does The Dilution Method Work For DOT Drug Tests?
Since the FMCSA requires that a DOT drug test be a urinalysis, then yes, dilution will work fine. At least, it will be if you happen to be a pot smoker.
You’ll be given a standard 5-panel test that looks for other toxins as well, so if you do more than just smoke pot you’ll need to be aware of their detection periods and plan accordingly.
For most other drugs besides weed, detection periods are measured in days, not weeks. THC cannabanoids are kind of in a class by themselves because of the way they’re stored in the body (in your fat cells), which is why marijuana use can be detected so much longer than other drugs.
What’s The Best Way To Pass A DOT Drug Test?
For a routine piss test, federal law doesn’t require you to be observed. So you can dilute, as long as you do it CORRECTLY. When you do it right, you’re genuinely able to give a clean, ‘undiluted’ specimen right on the spot.
Of course you could also substitute, as long as you have access to clean pee and you’re able to keep it at the right temperature. You might also be able to use synthetic urine, which is mostly reliable.
But a few labs are able to detect certain ‘markers’ in synthetic urine that give it away. It’s a cat & mouse game that is always changing, so you just never know. Which is why I recommend that you use a ‘real powdered urine kit’ instead, if you can get your hands on one. It’s literally real human urine, and as long as the temperature is in the right range it’s a guaranteed pass.
HOWEVER – if you’ve recently failed a test, or if you’re coming back to work after being off because of an accident or something like that, then your drug test WILL be supervised.
For DOT Drug Tests, There Are Two Problems With Using Dilution
Federal regulations don’t require on-the-spot random tests for DOT tests. So most DOT employers schedule routine drug tests, and you don’t have to worry about being randomly tested. But if you happen to work for a real jerk who prefers to surprise his employees, then you’re in trouble.
Dilution won’t work in a situation where you aren’t given at least a couple hours notice. In that situation, I hate to say it but you’re pretty much screwed. I sure wish I could invent a magic pill that would help pot smokers pass on a minute’s notice, because I’d be a millionaire.
Another situation where you might be screwed is if you’re being RE-TESTED. This one is hard to predict, because it depends on the individual circumstances in your case. But there’s always a chance that for a re-test, your specimen will be tested at a much lower tolerance level, 15ng/ml instead of 50ng/ml.
Unless you stopped smoking for at least a few weeks prior, then it will be virtually impossible to dilute enough to get your metabolite levels below a 15ng/ml cut-off.
But USUALLY, if you’re being asked to give a whole new specimen, then it means you’re going to be tested at the higher tolerance level first…
So What’s The Take-Away?
First, you’d better hope and pray that your DOT drug test is scheduled, and not random. If it’s a routine test and you know you won’t be observed, then substitution is definitely worth considering. And if you have a scheduled test that even might be supervised, then you can dilute, but in that situation the chances are slightly higher that you’ll be tested at the lower tolerance level of 15ng/ml.

I just took a DOT test after not smoking for 2 months and got a faint positive. Luckily 2 and a half weeks later they let me retest since it was only a faint positive. I eat very healthy, run about 20 miles a week and have relatively little body fat. I drank/pissed a lot before going in for the test as well. Don’t believe the hype, 20ng THC tests are hard as fuck to pass.

Well as for passing a DOT i have my own experience smoking out then three days later taking the DOT and the remedy I used worked very well but it’s a good sacrifice during the three day period. To start of you need to stop smoking, during the day drink plenty of lemonade without sugar it will be sour as hell you will usually be fasting for two days nothing but liquid diet at nights drink 2 teaspoons uniodized salt in a liter of water and this will clean out your intestines it sure will flush you out so within a hour or less of drinking the salt drink be close to a restroom and this will be for only two days and on the third day eat the most fattiest foods you can think of for that whole day and don’t forget to home test yourself just to be safe it sounds hard and nasty but it’s a good sacrifice and worth it thanks to this process I passed my DOT i took this past Monday and this following Monday I’m off to Israel for some great experiences once in a lifetime opportunity

Today is Thursday and I have to schedule it before next Wed so it gives me some time. Today is my 2nd day without smoking, doing okay, but fining! I took a DOT test after not smoking for 34 days in that month I also used 2 2week whole body cleanses and drank about 1 1/2 to2 gallons of water I’m 189 lbs and 5’10” tall and failed my test. It has now been 70 days and one more full body cleansing with 1 3/4 to 2 gallons of water and my next test will be in 3 days.
1) What did I do wrong the 1st time?
2) will I pass on my 73rd day of not smoking?

You did a couple things wrong, but you can’t be blamed. You were just following the same misinformation that most people accept as fact. Doesn’t matter how many people repeat something – if it isn’t true, it isn’t true, simple as that.
1) EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. Just because “Person A” is clean in 30 days (or 2 weeks, etc. etc.) doesn’t mean you will be.
2) ‘Whole body cleanses’ might be good for your general health, but they’re useless for passing drug tests. Read the fine print. What you mean by ‘detox’ and what the manufacturer means by detox are two different things. They deliberately mislead people into thinking their product will help you pass a drug test, when it won’t.
3) If your test is in 3 days, you’d better STOP drinking so much water. The only thing it will do for you at this point is completely deplete your creatinine levels. In that case, even if you’re negative for drugs you still might fail because your urine will look diluted.
After 73 days of not smoking you’ll almost certainly pass, but why rely on someone else’s opinion? GET A HOME DRUG TEST AND USE IT. It’s the only way to know for sure.
Thanks I will pick one up. Although I did that before the 1st test and it came back with a faint line (negative) so you can see why I am reluctant to have confidance but, I will do it again. The mro told me that it might have been because I was kinda dehidrated which made my piss more concentrated IDK.

Dee, Just wanted to let you know that I was in a accident in the truck I drive last Friday. Noone was injured, but there was some damage to the truck and a telephone pole. A higher power prevented me from rearending a minivan ahead of me. It had been 10 days since I smoked anything and that was not much. I had about a half liter of water and what coffee I had left that didnt get tossed in the wreck that I drank before the company safety guy got there. He took me to the hospital for a drug test and so far so good, no news is good news. Also as a kicker there were NO citations issued. I am truly blessed. Just wanted to let everyone know. Tom

No, you won’t be clean but you might be DEAD!!!
DON’T DRINK BLEACH. It’s dangerous and has nothing to do with passing a drug test.
Years ago people were able to pass tests by putting a few drops of bleach IN THEIR SPECIMEN CUP, but even that doesn’t work any more because labs test for adulterants like bleach. Anyone who tells you to actually drink bleach doesn’t know what the hell they’re talking about, so you should ignore them.
Your best bet is to start drinking a gallon of water a few hours before your test appointment. Anything you drink between now and then doesn’t do anything to increase your chances of passing.

How long will some one elses urine last if I were to keep it in my locker between tests? Or should I get a synthetic and if so what kind works the best?

hows it going people, I have a DOT test coming up on Friday, I’ve been an avid smoker for the last year, I’m 5’10 180lbs with a decent metabolism rate. The last day I smoked was the 27th of July and I ate a brownie that day (sux right). My test is on THE 20TH. I hoping to GOD that I pass this test. I’ve been drinking plenty of water with some green tea extract on the side, in hopes of flushing out the THC out of my system. I also bought this bottle hoping that it can mask the THC in my system when I take my test on Friday. In addition to that I also placed an order for a drug testing kit, hopefully it will come in before my test. I just wanted to know if anyone else has been in this position and how they fared. Alright dee, i’ve smoked atleast 5 times a day for about 2 years now, i have a drug test in 5 days, im a little over 200lbs i dont know if that matters. This is my first drug test and it is a DOT drug test, i need some advice!
Just a note:
I set up a lot of my employee’s drug testing through iDOT (Illinois). The tests are open door. They do test for synthetics for those who are somehow able to still sneak around it, and also test for chemical masks. These are tests that look to see if natural proteins and chemicals in your body are missing, suggesting that you took a cleanser for the test. If you are on probation then cleansers are probably a good answer for you, because you can’t be sent to jail for failing to have natural things in your body. However, depending on how serious your employer is about testing for drugs, or if it is just standard practice, and to what degree they test, if you need to cleanse for a DOT test, I would suggest that you quit doing drugs before you apply for a job as a driver, or exercise and drink ridiculous amounts of water and green teas, and natural detoxifiers.
Also, if you are on a script they will test you further. By that I mean that if your doctor gives you Vicodin then on a 5 pannel test you would just test positive for opiates. But if they left it that then you could also be doing heroin or Oxycontin. And they will give you a 10 pannel test. At the facility we use at my company they do not conduct 10 pannel for whatever reason. So, the sample is then sent to a hospital. The DOT test will detect (I believe) 50ng/ml, the hospital it is sent to if it needs further testing is more sensitive. We have had people pass a marijuana test for DOT and actually fail at the hospital because they were on Xanax or whatever and needed further varification. So, be careful, and good luck.
It is not uncommon for your HR team to be pretty buddy-buddy with the people who are conducting your drug tests, as we have to talk to these people on a daily basis, with every employee we hire. While they should just disclose that a test was negative for drugs or positive for drugs It is not completely uncommon for them to say that a test was sketchy, that you were nervous, etc. And that could put you at the top of the list for “random testing”. I would really suggest being clean at the time of applying for jobs. Or using natural means of detoxifying the body.
I’m stressing HARD…i’m suppose to go help with the oil spill, however the company is up in Northern California…so I’d have to fly out there this weekend to go and take a DOT test…however I’ve been smoking about 2 grams a week for the last couple months, and jus quit a few days ago…..only thing Im worried about is if they watch me pee…because I’m sure I’d fail of course. make sure your son is not on any meds cause i took a DOT test on monday the drug test was fine but you take a physical at the clinic they test your urine for sugar and dibetes and they found protein/crystal in the pee so be real careful everyone cause i got disqualified
I have a probation test coming up on wed. I have read alot on this site and it talks about diluting. I am 250lbs and smoked everyday for the last five years.. and the stuff i was smoking has VERY high THC levels. Probably the highest you can get..(hydro and hash) i have stopped for good as of 5 days ago.. I have a great career and cant afford to violate.. i thought i was going to be tested at court a couple months back so i stopped for 5 days and used Instant acting detox 32 oz drink.. i took an at home test and passed.. I did also drink a good amount of water… My question is should I take a drink with diluting so my creatine levels and color is normal? If so what drink?

Thank you for the fast response, I appreciate your input, maybe sometime I’ll try it at home a few times, I purchase the at home tests from ebay for 1 to 2 dollars each so doing some experiments wont be expensive, I have tried the First Check before and they seem like good tests, but I do recommend purchasing the cheap ones in bulk from the computer because the first checks run up to 17 bucks each…OUCH! but yeah, I’ll give it a shot at home some time…as of right now though I am clean and havent done anything in well over a month. I was just reading up on some false positives for drug tests and it says that Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) can cause a false positive for marijuana THC Any comments?

Yeah I’ve read that too about the B-2 creating a false positive, but all I can say is that in 3 yrs of doing this I’ve never heard of ONE single person that that actually happened to. Until I hear from someone that can give me a first-hand account, I have to assume that it’s just another rumor that somehow got started and just won’t die.
I also know an older trucker who takes 1 hit on a friday night comes up clean with at home test 2 AND 3 days later (he uses at home tests on regular basis for knowledge purposes.) Obviously the best way to come up clean is dont smoke. but taking a A HIT or 2 once a week is the best way to enjoy cannabis without much worries and always with atleast 2 days prior to your work week beginning for obvious reasons, most companies wont have you test on the weekend. But I say, USERS BEWARE, nothing is fool proof.
I have taken DOT drug tests on several occasions (being a trucker) and not all of them are the same in terms of what they want. I had to take a random UA for an LTL (less than truckload) carrier and I smoked 5 times a day for months, when test time came I had 3 hours notice and drank about a gallon of water with no vitamins and I passed with no problem, then I switched to an Over the road carrier, went for my pre-employment and did the same thing and was told it was dilute-negative and told to take another one, diluted it again, and was told to take another one, then got fed up and used someone elses pee and passed. But beware, some companies are different in their requirements. I would agree with Dee and use some vitamins to yellow up your piss. I have never tried it but it seems like it would make sense if your dilute-negative. And some companies consider dilute-negative an automatic Positive, SO BEWARE!

I have been tallking to OTR CDL-A truck drivers and took a DOT drug test. According to the head doctor at the clinic and the drivers, this information is not compiled or kept in any location except the one where the testing was done. It is not shared unless requested properly. Each company you apply to is required to drug test upon acceptance of employment. However, the forces behind all this B.S. are attempting to get regs passed to centralize this info. Besides taking something to mask our vices, each of us needs to petition Congress to legalize drugs and end the WAR (on)OF DRUGS by the military governors and their CIA financed destruction of LIBERTY,not democracy, in our America. By the way, this is the main reason they don’t close our border with Mexico. SERIOUS War TACTIC.

Wow, that would be TRULY scary if it happened. It would mean potential employers would be able to see if you ever failed a drug test, so there would be a lot fewer second chances. I wonder if these attempts are to compile only DOT test results, or all test results? Either one is pretty bad…

as i have recently failed a drug screen for an employer and got termninated i know that having a class b with air endorsement and applying for other jobs noone else can find out,but now i am getting my class a that nothing changes except that if yopu fail your potential employer would have to specifically ask why i got terminated and that would be the only way i would have gotten told on.those random drug screens that you get after you get your liscense those are for your employer those tests you take before you get your liscense those are federally mandated so they observe those,also if you get pulled over of course thats federal,atleast thats my 2 cents for what i have expierenced,i have noticed that everyone is diffrent.

§ 40.87 What are the cutoff concentrations for initial and confirmation tests?
(a) As a laboratory, you must use the cutoff concentrations displayed in the following table for initial and confirmation drug tests. All cutoff concentrations are expressed in nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL). The table follows:
Type of Drug or Metabolite – (1) Marijuana metabolites
(i) Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol-9-carboxylic acid (THC)
Initial Test 50
Confirmation Test 15
(b) On an initial drug test, you must report a result below the cutoff concentration as negative. If the result is at or above the cutoff concentration, you must conduct a confirmation test.
(c) On a confirmation drug test, you must report a result below the cutoff concentration as negative and a result at or above the cutoff concentration as confirmed positive.
(d) You must report quantitative values for morphine or codeine at 15,000 ng/mL or above.

DOT tests only use GC/MS if the initial test at 50ng/ml is positive. The difference is they also do the initial test at a lab. Only if that is positive is the split specimen sent to a second lab for GC/MS testing. I took a DOT test this past Monday morning and haven’t heard from an MRO yet (that’s good!). It is now the following Sunday morning.
