A saliva drug test is a lot easier to pass than any other kind of drug test, so there’s really no excuse for failing one. But I have a sad story about someone who managed to fail one anyway, and I think it’s a good cautionary tale. It was a situation that could have been avoided SO easily if this guy had just taken his saliva drug test more seriously.
Ryan’s Saliva Drug Test Fiasco
This all happened a couple of months ago, at the time I’m writing this. Ryan bought my e-book on a Monday, and he had a pre-employment drug test coming up on Thursday that same week. The reason I know this is because he emailed me on that Monday with a question after he finished reading the e-book.
Turns out he was having a combination drug test and physical. Ryan’s lab appointment was for 8 a.m. on Thursday, and he mentioned that the instructions he’d been given said for him not to eat or drink anything after 10 p.m. the night before, except for water, plain coffee or plain tea.
For some reason this made him absolutely certain that he was going to be given a piss test, and he had emailed to ask me some questions about that. In his email he didn’t mention anything about passing a saliva test, and I could tell it wasn’t on his mind at all.
Weird Saliva Test Requirement?
If you’re told not to eat or drink anything before going in for a physical, one where you know you’re going to be drug tested, it actually doesn’t have anything to do with the drug test. The reason they ask you to fast is because they want to test your blood sugar levels, which is a standard part of a physical.
So I emailed Ryan back right away and told him all this, and I said he shouldn’t assume they were going to give him a urine test. I also told him that he could prepare for a urine test AND a saliva test at the same time, since the two methods don’t interfere with each other in any way. It’s just so damn easy to pass a saliva test if you prepare for it, so I really tried to get across to him that he needed to be ready for either type of test.
One Situation Where You Won’t Be Given A Saliva Test
I knew Ryan was applying for a job at a private company, so I knew it could go either way. But there are certain types of employment situations where you can bank on getting urine tested.
If the company or organization you work for (or want to work for) receives federal funding, or if it’s regulated by the federal government, then urine tests are mandatory. You definitely won’t be getting a saliva test in those situations, because the federal government sets the rules (agencies like any state Dept. of Transportation are a good example). But private companies can use any testing method they want.
Saliva Test Horror Story…
Well, I guess Ryan just didn’t believe me for some reason, and sure enough, he was given a saliva drug test – which he hadn’t done any preparation for AT ALL – and he failed his test.
I have no idea why he didn’t take my advice. False confidence? Maybe a touch of laziness? He sent me another email after he got his test results and admitted that he was a complete idiot for not listening to me. But this is one time when I really would have preferred to be wrong, because he missed out on a really good job as a result.
So, long story short, Ryan and I kept in touch and fortunately things did eventually work out for him, I’m happy to say. He finally got another job offer about a week ago, AND he had to pass another drug test. But this time they told him upfront that he was getting a urine test, so he followed the instructions in my e-book for that (again) and passed with no problem. He sounds pretty happy with the job he ended up with, but I don’t think he’d want to go through all that grief again if he had it to do over.
So what’s the moral of poor Ryan’s story? Just that even if passing a saliva drug test is really easy, you MUST take them seriously, folks.
You and I know that it’s complete insanity for employers to be wigged out about the humble weed. But the fact is, there are a lot of insane people who pull the strings and decide who gets hired and who gets to keep their job. And like I said before – a saliva drug test is so freakin’ easy to pass if you just prepare for it.
How To Pass A Saliva Test
Most smokers (not all, but most) can beat a mouth swab test just by not smoking for a day or two. But there are enough exceptions to that rule to make it too risky to count on. And a few random people will actually test positive for several weeks for some reason, so you don’t want to find out the hard way that you’re one of those poor folks.
If you want, you can get out your wallet and pay $30-$50 for a commercial mouth rinse that will probably help you pass. OR, you can go to any drugstore and spend $3-$4 for a bottle of plain old hydrogen peroxide. Tough choice, right?
Hydrogen peroxide is the active ingredient in a lot of saliva test mouthwashes. Just brush your teeth really good, rinse your mouth well with the peroxide, and your mouth will be clean enough to pass a saliva test for about 30 minutes to an hour. That’s it.
Consider Using A Home Test Kit
If you’re really paranoid about failing your test and you want to be 100% sure you’ll pass, then you might want to pick up a home saliva test kit. Do a trial run at home, and then just test yourself to make sure you pass.
The peace of mind alone makes the cost of a test kit worth it to some people, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to save a few bucks. Saliva test kits are around $25 (or more) if you buy them from a drugstore. If you have the time, you’ll save a chunk of change if you order a test kit online. Meditest charges fair prices and they have very reliable shipping. I’ve used them for several years without any problems at all.
Bottom line, saliva tests are easy to pass IF you prepare for them. People who manage to pass easily without doing anything at all are lucky, and yes, it does happen fairly often. But being too over-confident could really screw up your life, because not everyone is that lucky. And now that you know how easy it is to pass saliva tests, there’s no excuse for failing…

OK: here’s two different cotton swab testing:
1. I took 2 days off from smoking, gargles a lot of Listerine the hour or so before and I ended up passing. I didn’t keep it pressed against the inside of my cheek, instead i just held it between my teeth and waited.
2. If you want to take the chance of smoking all the way up to the day of your interview, then go for it. Just remember: LOTS of Listerine. It worked for a friend of mine but not for another. So this method is more risky.
Take the two days off, atleast 48 hours, and don’t forget the listerine. If they’re in the room the whole time and talking to you, you’ll have to press it against your inside cheek. But following the 1st story will make sure you pass!
JUST TAKE 2 DAYS OFF FROM SMOKING!!!! YOU CAN DO IT!!! JUST DON’T SMOKE FOR 2 WHOLE DAYS!!!!!!

I am currently un-employeed and have an Interview on Monday for a Security Position. I really need this job, but Im worried about the Drug Screening. Iv been employeed before by this company, about 5yrs ago. They used the Saliva Sponge method for the drug screening. Im sure they’ll use the same one. I read that you say that the saliva test is the EASIEST to pass, so Im asking for your advice/help. The bottom paragraph above says to just NOT smoke for a few days, and to take my own test at home to see where I stand. But theres gotta be more to it than that. Please fill me in on what Im missing. I know excercise helps. Sweat cleans your system. Is there anything else?

Eat healthy foods not greasy foods. Pot is stored in fat cells. Exercise is great, esp running-you will sweat more toxins out. I havent smoked for 2 weeks and am getting ready to take a swab test. I also recommend mouth wash for a few days to cleanse ur mouth also use day of test. Hyrdrogen peroxide will clean mouth as well can also be used prior to test. Brushing and flossing will help. Also if you dont have one buy a tongue scraper which will cleanse ur mouth as well. Drink lots of water and gatorade-anything that will cleanse ur system (tea is good too). Avoid being around second hand smoke as well if you can. I tell my friends to go outside. If you follow these steps you should pass no problem. On a rare case my lil bro smoked a bowl right before his swab test and was hired so a little luck could be involved. Just dont risk it if you really want the job. Bc once ur hired u can get high as a kite esp after not smoking for 2 weeks. Best of luck to you

WOO HOO! I’ve been reading up about how to pass my swab test, and I did! Here’s what happened:
I did not smoke the night before, BUT….. I did not have a full 48 hours clean.
I drank a lot of liquids the day before the test. I brushed my teeth four times, flossed twice, and used an anti-septic oral cleanser twice.
The day of my test, I brushed my teeth & flossed, used the oral cleanser and sucked on a mint on the drive to the test.
Once I got into the parking lot, I swished HIGH VOLTAGE Saliva Cleanse Mouthwash. The bottle says that if cleanses your saliva for up to a half an hour. I’m not sure if this step was essential or not. The little bottle of mouthwash cost me 18 dollars at a local headshop.
SO! My point is:
brush your teeth OFTEN and do not smoke the day before your test! Use an anti-septic oral cleanser with hydrogen peroxide and you should be fine!

Just got popped in a job interview. was not expecting it! they pulled out a swab contraption. needless to say my stomach dropped pass my sac. i put as much goob as i could on it and thought for sure i was done before i even started. here is the miracle. I jus took a swab test without warning and i smoked the night before. that same night before i went to bed i brush and used mouthwash and did the samething that morning of the test. i brushed n rinse arund 8am and had to be there at 9am. The last time I smoked was on 11/25. I have my test on 12/4. That is nine days. Would that be enough to have it out of my system? And if other people are smoking in the car around you, would that affect you on a saliva drug test?
So I just had to take an oral drug test at work. At my job they have a medical facility built into the building. I knew they were going to test me this shift which took place less than 12 hours ago. I was also certain it would be a UA. Turns out it was a mouth swab. The weird thing is is that the test didn’t give quick and easy results. In fact when I got the job, they tested me the quick and easy way and I smoked 12 hours prior. This examination takes 72 hours for reults. And the last time I smoked was about 7 weeks or so ago. Should I be alright? Saliva doesn’t go back that far does it? PLEASE get back to me soon.

Thought I would pass this along. Went to a job interview today (Wed). Knew they required a drug test. Figured they would send me to some lab for a piss test, probably tomorrow since the interview was late in the afternoon. Was going to get one of those synthetic urine kits tomorrow. So I get there and they give me this plastic stick with a little sponge on the end and tell me to put it in my mouth and bite down on it for a while. I smoked a bunch of killer weed Sunday night. None since. I didn’t even know these saliva tests existed. Before I left for the interview I was drinking some raspberry flavored, Kroger brand, “In an instant light drink mix” (sugar free). I like to put it in a coffee cup and heat it up in the microwave and drink it hot. I noticed that when I took the sponge out of my mouth it was stained red from the drink mix. Not sure if that had anything to do with it but I passed.

That’s great you passed, man. Especially since you weren’t expecting it. But I doubt if what you drank had anything to do with it, nothing you described would make any difference. Most people are clean for a saliva test within 24-48 hrs after smoking, so it sounds like you were just super lucky it worked out the way it did. :-)

I smoked a menthol cigarette just before they put the stick in my mouth and I failed. Is it the menthol cig that showed up as alcohol?
Then the listerine would show up as well, right? If people used the listerine method… right before the test, too… you’d think so.. (you didn’t ask what it was that showed up on the test?)

Hello everyone! I Had to take a swab test for my job 8am on oct/31. I was really scared and just knew I was gonna fail this. So came on this website and read some comments. I Smoke 4-5 blunts a week for… The past 4 years and i quit smoking for four prior to the test. So on the day of my test about 7am I gargled peroxide for about 30 secs and then some mouthwash. Brushed my teeth vigorously for about a minute. Repeated once. Smoked a marlboro light on the way there had some southern sweet tea. Popped two peppermint Altoids in my mouth on the way in. Got the stick in my mouth and I just kept it in between my back teeth it touched my tongue and cheek a few times but I tried to keep it from. So after about 3 minutes I took it out and wiped the druel from my face. She said it would be Thursday or Friday before the results were back. Today (Thursday) I got a call and I passed. Also my co-worker had one two and she smokes more than I do and she stopped for two days and passed it with the same methods. So everything checks out great. Very impressed will recommend to others.

I used to be scared to take urine tests every time I had a job opportunity, because I thought I had to sweat, work out, drink cranberry juice, drink a detox fluid etc. But that shit is plain dumb. All you have to do is buy synthetic urine, warm it up, and pass the test. They sell them at smoke shops. My most recent job opportunity I went to the interview high as fuck thinking I was going to take a urine test which I was prepares for. Turns out it was a fucken SALIVA DRUG TEST. All I did was put it in my mouth and not let it touch my tongue or get any saliva on it. Well….I passed that bitch high, and got the job. Saliva test are easy so if ur getting ready to take one, don’t panic just don’t let the swab touch your tongue or get any saliva on it. Hope this helps

Urineluck synthetic no-mix urine (made by Spectrum Labs) is the ONLY synthetic urine that is absolutely 100% undetectable. When testing for synthetic piss, they look at creatinine levels in your urine (which no other synth has been able to pass because of how quickly creatinine breaks down).
I personally use this product for every urinalysis. I also worked in a testing lab for 4 years, so I can tell you straight up, that particular one works great. It’s 20 bucks at the smoke shop down the street, and I assume it’s a pretty general price.
I’m taking a swab tomorrow, though. Does anyone know a store chain that sells them? I just wanna be extra sure. ;D

Doesn’t make people stupid or crazy(unless you smoke a fattie blunt to the dome, maybe kinda dumb if you’re not use to that much intake of the grass)… Just makes me happy and fall asleep after a good read… AND maybe slight munchies…
