A saliva drug test is a lot easier to pass than any other kind of drug test, so there’s really no excuse for failing one. But I have a sad story about someone who managed to fail one anyway, and I think it’s a good cautionary tale. It was a situation that could have been avoided SO easily – if this guy had only taken his saliva drug test more seriously.
Ryan’s Saliva Drug Test Fiasco
This all happened a couple of months ago, at the time I’m writing this. Ryan bought my e-book on a Monday, and he had a pre-employment drug test coming up on Thursday that same week. The reason I know this is because he emailed me on that Monday with a question after he finished reading my e-book.
Turns out he was having a combination drug test and physical. Ryan’s lab appointment was for 8 a.m. on Thursday, and he mentioned that the instructions he’d been given said for him not to eat or drink anything after 10 p.m. the night before, except for water, plain coffee or plain tea.
For some reason (I have no idea why) this made him absolutely certain that he was going to be given a piss test, and he had emailed to ask me some questions about that. In his email he didn’t mention anything about passing a saliva test, and I could tell it wasn’t on his mind at all.
Weird Saliva Test Requirement?
If you’re told not to eat or drink anything before going in for a physical, one where you know you’re going to be drug tested, it actually doesn’t have anything to do with the drug test. The reason they ask you to fast is because they want to test your blood sugar levels, which is a standard part of a physical.
So I emailed Ryan back right away and told him all this, and I said he shouldn’t assume they were going to give him a urine test. I also told him that he could prepare for a urine test AND a saliva test at the same time, since the two methods don’t interfere with each other in any way. It’s just so damn easy to pass a saliva test if you prepare for it, so I really tried to get across to him that he needed to be ready for either type of test.
One Situation Where You Won’t Be Given A Saliva Test
I knew Ryan was applying for a job at a private company, so I knew it could go either way. But there are certain types of employment situations where you can bank on getting urine tested.
If the company or organization you work for (or want to work for) receives federal funding, or if it’s regulated by the federal government, then urine tests are mandatory. You definitely won’t be getting a saliva test in those situations, because the federal government sets the rules (agencies like any state Dept. of Transportation are a good example). But private companies can use any testing method they want.
Saliva Test Horror Story…
Well, I guess Ryan just didn’t believe me for some reason. Yup, sure enough, he was given a saliva drug test – which he hadn’t done any preparation for AT ALL – and he failed his test.
I have no idea why he didn’t take my advice. False confidence? Maybe a touch of laziness? He sent me another email after he got his test results and admitted that he was a complete idiot for not listening to me. But this is one time when I really would have preferred to be wrong, because he missed out on a really good job as a result.
So, long story short, Ryan and I kept in touch and fortunately things did eventually work out for him, I’m happy to say. He finally got another job offer about a week ago, AND he had to pass another drug test. But this time they told him upfront that he was getting a urine test, so he followed the instructions in my e-book for that (again) and passed with no problem. He sounds pretty happy with the job he ended up with, but I don’t think he’d want to go through all that grief again if he had it to do over.
So what’s the moral of poor Ryan’s story? Just that even if passing a saliva drug test is really easy, you MUST take them seriously, folks.
You and I know that it’s complete insanity for employers to be wigged out about the humble weed. But the fact is, there are a lot of insane people who pull the strings and decide who gets hired and who gets to keep their job. And like I said before – a saliva drug test is so freakin’ easy to pass if you just prepare for it.
How To Pass A Saliva Test
Most smokers (not all, but most) can beat a mouth swab test just by not smoking for a day or two. But there are enough exceptions to that rule to make it too risky to count on. And a few random people will actually test positive for several weeks for some reason, so you don’t want to find out the hard way that you’re one of those poor folks.
If you want, you can get out your wallet and pay $30-$50 for a commercial mouth rinse that will probably help you pass. OR, you can go to any drugstore and spend $3-$4 for a bottle of plain old hydrogen peroxide. Tough choice, right?
Hydrogen peroxide is the active ingredient in a lot of saliva test mouthwashes. Just brush your teeth really good, rinse your mouth well with the peroxide, and your mouth will be clean enough to pass a saliva test for about 30 minutes to an hour. That’s it.
Consider Using A Home Test Kit
If you’re really paranoid about failing your test and you want to be 100% sure you’ll pass, then you might want to pick up a home saliva test kit. Do a trial run at home, and then just test yourself to make sure you pass.
The peace of mind alone makes the cost of a test kit worth it to some people, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to save a few bucks. Saliva test kits are around $25 (or more) if you buy them from a drugstore. If you have the time, you’ll save a chunk of change if you order a test kit online. Meditest charges fair prices and they have very reliable shipping. I’ve used them for several years without any problems at all.

Bottom line, saliva tests are easy to pass IF you prepare for them. People who manage to pass easily without doing anything at all are lucky, and yes, it does happen fairly often. But being too over-confident could really screw up your life, because not everyone is that lucky. And now that you know how easy it is to pass saliva tests, there’s no excuse for failing!

Dorian, Percocets will show up as a narcotic if the test is designed to detect drugs in a general manner. If the text is a more extensive type it can detect drugs in a more specific way and Percocet will show up as oxicodone.You may be okay though if you have had a perscription for some medicine that has oxicodone it within the last year and you can show proof to your employer or who ever they cannot do anything about it being in your system.

How far back does the swab test for heroin?
I would think that heroin would stay in your system for about as long as any narcotic pain killer which is at most 2-3 days. I take Lortab and have had to take a UA within 12 hours after my last dose. I was suprised as hell when they told me that it was clean. However, that was a UA and I drank about a gallon of water. You should hold off for a day or so and maybe do what some of these other people are doing just for good measure. Good Luck!!!

Here’s a thought….QUIT. If you really care about getting or keeping your job, maybe think about quitting smoking pot. Also excessively using hydrogen peroxide over time can really mess some people’s mouths and throats up.

Well that was a little brash and rude. I was just putting my thoughts out there. I wasn’t trying to start a fight over the internet like a high school kid. I also wasn’t aware that we needed to put statistics, standard deviations and norm group populations when we leave a comment. People can live their lives how they want, who am I to judge. However, if you want to save yourself some stress about possibly losing your job because you can’t pass a drug test than the best solution is to weigh your options. Either squeek by a drug screen everytime or quit and be stress free. The choice is yours.

These tests are an invasion of my privacy. What I do at home does not affect my job. If I were getting high as a kite at work, THEN it is their concern, but the bottom line is, your employer won’t fire you for getting trashed on your day off (they would if you came into work like that, obviously). Why should pot be any different? I don’t drink, I do hallucinogens on rare occasions (shrooms, acid, ex), but my version of going home and having a beer after work is smokin a few bowls. I’m not hurting anyone, I’m not getting knocked up, and hot damn, cooking is great! So get off your soap box you stupid wench. Some of us like to smoke. Feh.

Hello I was wondering if you can can tell me what my chances of failing my swab test. I don’t smoke rarely well I had somethings going on and I took on hit of weed. Well long story short I got a random and I brush everyday and I used mouth wash the day before. When they had me take it I didn’t follow the directions they gave me on how to take it. 1. No matter what stop drug use immediatly when u find out you have a test whether or not its in 24 hrs or 24 days…
2. Brush your teeth thoroughly under tongue and all like three times a day
3.Use hydrogen peroxide and rinse your mouth like ten times the day before and the day of test
4.I personally buy this saliva cleansing mouth wash made by magnum detox you use it before the test but i wouldnt rely strictly on that.
5.If its an employer administering the test try and not let it touch your cheeks or tongue.
6.Hope for the best do these steps even more often then what i say if it makes you more confortable i dont really keep count i just do this like as many times i can. ill go through a botttle of HP so ten times is just a gues ya know…

This site helped me pass my drug test.I’m a weed smoker and I smoke at least everyday day or so. This is what I did to pass my drug test, I stopped smoking for two days and brushed my teeth, gum, tongue and side inner mouth.Then I used my mouth wash that has hydrogen peroxide to rinse constantly.On the day of my drug test, 5-10 mins before I went in, I used the same mouth wash that had hydrogen peroxide to rinse my mouth.I placed the stick in between my teeth and avoided it from touching my tongue or the gum or even the side inner mouth and I passed.Good luck if you just read this.

as heron and morphine ar alkaloids the best way to neutralise is to use an acid around 10-20 minutes before the test as these two drugs are known for staying in cavities in the mouth the more poweful the acid the better the result i myself use citric acid and have had no problems yet (i get weekly swab testing through not being ready for a random test)

Ok… I just got accepted to RN nursing school and will be taking random saliva drug tests throughout the two year program. Any suggestions on what I could do daily to beat the test if I were ever selected to test? I am going to take B-12 vitamins everyday to help with energy metabolism. Do you think that by doing this and brushing my mouth well every morning, followed by rinsing with a diluted solution of peroxide and water right before going to class, bringing it inside with me to swish real quick if they call me to test, and chew peppermint altoids during class also just in case im called… Do you think I could beat a random saliva test? I guess I’m just going to have to quit. This is the hardest thing to do. Because I have been smoking everyday all day…morning, evening, night. It even helps me when studying because I retain the information better. My levels are probably extremely high though, so Im concerned I may not pass. I also have to take the initial drug test for the program on aug. 19, but i plan to just use a detox from gnc to pass that saliva test. DEE- Please help! Your information seems very helpful.
By the way, Ive seen some comments posted after an RN left a post about her besting a saliva drug test. I DO NOT smoke before or during work. I KNOW I would not function properly if I were to do it before or during work and besides, I get to hungry and wouldnt get any work done cuz Id be eating the whole shift. lol. Weed i something I do when I get off of an exhausting day of work to help me relax and unwind. Trust me, I am a responsible pot smoker. I would NEVER smoke and go tend to a patient. WORK and POT DO NOT mix for me. I am responsible enough with my habit to know better, (this is just MY personal experiences with it..others can smoke it at work during breaks and function just fine.)
OH… and dont think you havent been tended too by a nurse at a hospital that goes home and night and smokes a lil pot to help her relax from her stressful day. TRUST!
I agree.. work @ a nursing home.. definitely what I used to do to unwind. And I personally would rather have a pot smoking nurse than an alcoholic or pill popping nurse.. just my opinion..
