A saliva drug test is a lot easier to pass than any other kind of drug test, so there’s really no excuse for failing one. But I have a sad story about someone who managed to fail one anyway, and I think it’s a good cautionary tale. It was a situation that could have been avoided SO easily – if this guy had only taken his saliva drug test more seriously.
Ryan’s Saliva Drug Test Fiasco
This all happened a couple of months ago, at the time I’m writing this. Ryan bought my e-book on a Monday, and he had a pre-employment drug test coming up on Thursday that same week. The reason I know this is because he emailed me on that Monday with a question after he finished reading my e-book.
Turns out he was having a combination drug test and physical. Ryan’s lab appointment was for 8 a.m. on Thursday, and he mentioned that the instructions he’d been given said for him not to eat or drink anything after 10 p.m. the night before, except for water, plain coffee or plain tea.
For some reason (I have no idea why) this made him absolutely certain that he was going to be given a piss test, and he had emailed to ask me some questions about that. In his email he didn’t mention anything about passing a saliva test, and I could tell it wasn’t on his mind at all.
Weird Saliva Test Requirement?
If you’re told not to eat or drink anything before going in for a physical, one where you know you’re going to be drug tested, it actually doesn’t have anything to do with the drug test. The reason they ask you to fast is because they want to test your blood sugar levels, which is a standard part of a physical.
So I emailed Ryan back right away and told him all this, and I said he shouldn’t assume they were going to give him a urine test. I also told him that he could prepare for a urine test AND a saliva test at the same time, since the two methods don’t interfere with each other in any way. It’s just so damn easy to pass a saliva test if you prepare for it, so I really tried to get across to him that he needed to be ready for either type of test.
One Situation Where You Won’t Be Given A Saliva Test
I knew Ryan was applying for a job at a private company, so I knew it could go either way. But there are certain types of employment situations where you can bank on getting urine tested.
If the company or organization you work for (or want to work for) receives federal funding, or if it’s regulated by the federal government, then urine tests are mandatory. You definitely won’t be getting a saliva test in those situations, because the federal government sets the rules (agencies like any state Dept. of Transportation are a good example). But private companies can use any testing method they want.
Saliva Test Horror Story…
Well, I guess Ryan just didn’t believe me for some reason. Yup, sure enough, he was given a saliva drug test – which he hadn’t done any preparation for AT ALL – and he failed his test.
I have no idea why he didn’t take my advice. False confidence? Maybe a touch of laziness? He sent me another email after he got his test results and admitted that he was a complete idiot for not listening to me. But this is one time when I really would have preferred to be wrong, because he missed out on a really good job as a result.
So, long story short, Ryan and I kept in touch and fortunately things did eventually work out for him, I’m happy to say. He finally got another job offer about a week ago, AND he had to pass another drug test. But this time they told him upfront that he was getting a urine test, so he followed the instructions in my e-book for that (again) and passed with no problem. He sounds pretty happy with the job he ended up with, but I don’t think he’d want to go through all that grief again if he had it to do over.
So what’s the moral of poor Ryan’s story? Just that even if passing a saliva drug test is really easy, you MUST take them seriously, folks.
You and I know that it’s complete insanity for employers to be wigged out about the humble weed. But the fact is, there are a lot of insane people who pull the strings and decide who gets hired and who gets to keep their job. And like I said before – a saliva drug test is so freakin’ easy to pass if you just prepare for it.
How To Pass A Saliva Test
Most smokers (not all, but most) can beat a mouth swab test just by not smoking for a day or two. But there are enough exceptions to that rule to make it too risky to count on. And a few random people will actually test positive for several weeks for some reason, so you don’t want to find out the hard way that you’re one of those poor folks.
If you want, you can get out your wallet and pay $30-$50 for a commercial mouth rinse that will probably help you pass. OR, you can go to any drugstore and spend $3-$4 for a bottle of plain old hydrogen peroxide. Tough choice, right?
Hydrogen peroxide is the active ingredient in a lot of saliva test mouthwashes. Just brush your teeth really good, rinse your mouth well with the peroxide, and your mouth will be clean enough to pass a saliva test for about 30 minutes to an hour. That’s it.
Consider Using A Home Test Kit
If you’re really paranoid about failing your test and you want to be 100% sure you’ll pass, then you might want to pick up a home saliva test kit. Do a trial run at home, and then just test yourself to make sure you pass.
The peace of mind alone makes the cost of a test kit worth it to some people, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to save a few bucks. Saliva test kits are around $25 (or more) if you buy them from a drugstore. If you have the time, you’ll save a chunk of change if you order a test kit online. Meditest charges fair prices and they have very reliable shipping. I’ve used them for several years without any problems at all.

So I went to a interview and they called me back and told me to come back the next day for a drug test. I want and it was the saliva test. I smoked 5 days earlier willl I pass ? But I also drank that flush drink thinking it was a urine test. Will that help me to pass ?

I don’t know about the swab tests for pre employment but apparently the ones the Police use here in California can be beat with a simple package of yellow mustard. Something to do with the mustard plant that ruins the test! Always carry a pack of yellow mustard from the local 7/11 in your car just in case…

Okay…here’s the situation…I was just sentenced to 60 days county jail and have to report in 8 days. The judge granted me work release, but I was told I’d be given a drug test before they let me out for work and if its positive I’m screwed – no work release!!! I smoked a little bud last night. Go ahead and go for it!!! But do these very important things first…
Brush your teeth very very VERY thoroughly. Your tongue, your cheeks, your gums… Anywhere you can get your toothbrush to reach.
Use a half water/half peroxide rinse (I did the rinse 3 times just before going in, as well as a brushing one more time for good measure).
All of the sources online say to use altoids. Im not sure why, as they are just mints, nothing more… but I went ahead and ate about 20 of them anyway, and rubbed the crushed up mints onto my gums, and cheeks.
When handed the swab, do not rub it on your gums, cheeks as instructed. If they watch you- rub it on your teeth instead. They will also tell you to keep it in your cheek for a few minutes. I left mine in a hollow space in my mouth instead.
I took my test on wednesday (4/20 of all days!! lol) and smoked a bowl approximately 20 hours prior to the test.
Got the results today, and they came back clean!!!! (My mouth still hurts from the evasive cleaning lol!)

Well…I got to take a drug test tomorrow morning to get this job I really want. I have been talking to this place for a couple weeks and went through 2 interviews. I was pretty sure that I would have to take a drug test, so I went and bought some synthetic urine, which has worked for me 3 times in the past few months. (I got a couple jobs this way, but hated them both, so I bailed).
Since I had the synthetic pee, I figured that I didn’t have to bother with quitting. Imagine my surprise and dismay when I was informed on Friday afternoon that the test would be an oral one.
I had never heard of such a testing technique, so I got online and ended up here. I am going to do the whole peroxide/ altoid thing plus I drove to a shop and bought some “special” mouthwash. (“Stinger”..online sells for @40..I got it for 20 [420;)] )
I hope it works. What I have read on this site and a few others has lead me to believe that I should be OK when it comes to weed, but what worries me is the 1/2 perkaset I took 2 nights ago….

Yah, I had a surprise swab test at work and had smoked the night before so I was like crap. Well, I did the best I could being at work and not having anything to use I went to the bathroom, got a hand full of soap and just gargled and used my finger to clean the inside of my mouth and I’ll tell you, soap taste horrible. Conclusion, I passed. Just something off hand I tried.
I had a drug test this morning, and I read online that weed passes out between 14 and 24 hours so i stopped smoking around 930am yesterday morning. First off, i did pass with flying colors, yay!!! and here’s how i did it:
brush your teeth like every hour or so including gums, checks and tongue..
mix perioxide and water for a mouthwash and use after every brush or before..
Drink water up until the test
use cough drops the day of ( try to avoid the colors, clear kind if possible)
listerine mouthwash the day of
if your a smoker, then smoke a cig before too, anything that masks the THC.. and you should be GOLDEN!!!
ALso TRY NOT TO TOUCH YOU CHEEKS DURING THE TEST, IF POSSIBLE JUST KEEP ON THE TEETH TO GET WET..

So I need assurance!!! I smoked lastnight around 11pm, a had a swab test today around 8:45am that I did not know I would have today, I had 2/3 of Magnum brand saliva cleansing mouthwash, rinsed at least 3 times with vinegar and ate a bunch of listerene strips and altoids all within at least 15 min of being tested and I had vinegar in my mouth withhin 2 minutes before the test, I do not know when I will find out the test but anyone , DID I PASS???? after all that???? please help :<

anonymous, i believe the least of your problems is a drug test… I think you need a spell checker or something… cause it seems you had a bit of a problem with typing fairly simple words out.. lol.. not trying to be a prick, but if you give it i’d say atleast 48 hours for your swab test, you’ll be alright, can’t say for sure 100%, but I believe you’ll be alright.
I have smoked almost daily for the last 21 years. I smoked the night before my mouth swab – about 11 hours before the test. The morning of the test, I brushed my teeth twice, including the cheek and gums; I ate a bunch of Altoids and then when it came to the mouth swab, I wiped the swap on my teeth and then held it between my teeth for the two minutes. It’s been a week and a half since the test and I still have my job – was told you usually get poor results back within 2-3 days. I have also heard that hydrogen pyroxide works really well to clean out your mouth as well and it really doesn’t taste all that bad. If you’re taking a mouth swab drug test and you only smoke pot, relax – it can be done. For those of you stressing because it’s been over a month since you’ve smoked and you have to take a test – stop stressing, regardless of what you’re mother has told you. Mouth swabs only detect drugs for 2-3 days at the most and THC can’t usually be detected in the mouth after 12-24 hours. If you have a urine test, pick up a $40.00 fake pee kit and hide it on your body somewhere. It even comes with a hand-warmer so you can get it to the right temperature.

I found out yesterday that i was going to be getting a mouth swab test today. I really hope that the methods explained on this website actually do work. I can’t lose my job. Wow, what a judgmental ass. You obviously have NO idea how hard it is to work as a nurse. If they want to go home and unwind by having a few tokes, they deserve it. Many of them do just that, and if you ever end up in a hospital, you’ll be lucky to have them at your bedside.

I happen to have spent a lot of time in hospitals, due to a relative with ongoing health problems. Anyone who has watched nurses while they work would know that there’s NO WAY you could do that job while you’re stoned, LOL. I’m always amazed at how organized you guys are and how much you can keep track of… I’m pretty sure that anyone who tried to that job while high wouldn’t last very long.
Not everyone is the same when they get stoned – I received a duel college degree, with honors. Not everyone uses it to be a lazy TV-watching reject. It is used for medicinal purposes as well. If you don’t have all the facts on how it effects everyone – go to another site.

lol yeah seems like there are quite a few lowe’s candidates up here on the site. best advice if you can is to prepare for it stay clean for 48 hrs try to exercise sweat out as much as u can.. drink plenty of water.. altoids right before you go in to the interview.. i got told if i smoked a ciggarette 10 mins prior that it would show back positive.. in fact all i think it does it cant be concluded.. might be an alternative route there if they cant conclude your results hence you have more time to try to clean your system or they could just say well, you’re screwed.. lol where are you applying at kevin what state?

I am heavy smoker of GB’s .I have been on Parole for 2 years now and I have a really good job that I really can’t afford to lose but I could not stop burning i slowed down a bit smoking like One Blunt a day between two people . Anyway I started looking up ways to bet this swab shit because its was just to much for me to have to stop smoking. So here’s what I found. Altoids are great the peppermint oil can completely kill THC. But I discovered 35% food grade Hydrogen Peroxide you can get this at any health food store. so what I do is is a very simple process i brush my teeth like crazy make sure you get the gums and the inside of the cheeks, Gargle with the peroxide and then top it off with a handful of altoids . I have passed about 23 tests this way. 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide is very strong and must be diluted before use.I failed one test and it came back hot for cocaine because I used CVS brand mouthwash which has Benzocaine in it which has the same chemical compound as cocaine. I mean that time I used the mouthwash last. So it was fresh in my mouth. Trust me this works I have literally got scientific on these bitches . I am off parole in two months and expecting a serious AK session from my homies.

Wow. A lot of anger being thrown around for people who advocate weed. I thought it helped people chill.
After doing a LOT of research, it is very standard that a person of average weight, height, BMI will have a clean saliva swab for THC after 3 days of not smoking or eating weed. There are some exceptions related to how much you typically use, how often you use, if you are obese, etc.
Severe changes in activity or water consumption can hurt you – a lot. If you’re not an exerciser, it is NOT advised to work out like crazy. It will throw of your body chemistry and could provide bad results on your drug test.
Nicotine can interfere with a swab test, so if you want a test that has to be repeated, the tips on using nicotine gum or lozenges might work.
Best case, if you can plan ahead – DO SO and refrain from using. If you can’t plan ahead, well, you could try the not touching the swab to your tongue thing but a savvy collection agency would be able to note that.

I was clean for a month did not use no drugs and I took a swab test and failed for meth how can I be clean this long and fail I eat 3 meals a day and good food 2in pork chops with veggies an potatoes. zantac (the heartburn medicine)can show up as meth…not sure if this is what happened to you but, my husband has never done meth and he showed up as positive for it. When he told the doc that he had taken a zantac, he informed him that this could result in a false positive.

Over time it didnt do much for me n also i feel it is having some effect on my body physically and mentally. I am quitting for sure but still with 2 months till i can light up that first joint n say “ahhh” loll. Before you go and stay stop smoking, i plan to use Marijuana as a medicine and nothing more. I am a very depressed and stressed out kid and the depression really takes a toll on my life in many aspects including school, family, friends, eating, exc. I dont wanna have to use this shit chemical but dont really wanna risk screwing up probation when i have 2 months left. However i dont know if i will able to get my shit together to get off probation (grades n shit) becuase i am often depressed. During my first probation i started smoking a little bit the first week i didnt c him n then stay clean the next week until i saw him. This worked for awhile but i got carried away with my method of diluting my piss n now my probation officer knows soo i cant use the dilution method. Also to add he as stop piss testing me lately. Ive recently been getting swab tested. I know now that i can control the amount i smoke because i am going to use it simply as a medicine nothing more, i dont wanna take this gift for granted. Ive been looking online and have heard about a few methods: use winterfresh gum n put the swab on it, mix water and rubbing alcohol and swirl it around your mouth like mouthwash, use mouthwash with peroxide, or simple chew altoids before the test. I have a friend who is on probation and i found out today is smoking and using the rubbing alcohol and water method for his swab test. I would like to know from you guys if any of u r on probation and get piss tested or swab tested like me and cant wait to for my much needed medicine what methods u guys have used to get around our retarted system and passed every time no exceptions. Also keep in my that i see him every 2 weeks and if i find a way to smoke i am going to smoke week 1 and use week 2 to get clean naturally. I am very skinny with almost no fat and have a crazy metabolism. Soo i would really truthfully and honestly from the bottom of my heart personally thank whoever toke the time to read and help me with my dilemma. Cant wait to hear from u guys!!!
Ok here is the deal…once you learn that you are gonna be tested…stop smokin’, bowlin, etc…Hydrogen Peroxide worked for me on the saliva test…Just keep swishing and let that foamy stuff get all in the sponge…what they do is give you a sponge like thingie that goes under the tongue for 10min…satuate the sponge with the peroxide and you should be ok….hope this helps
I took a mouth swab drug test today, 3/18/11 for my probation officer. I last smoked 3/17. I didn’t smoke 14 hrs. before the test. Believe me, I would have quit a week ago had I known. I brushed my teeth, gums, and tongue twice last night and then used straight peroxide afterwards. Today I brushed my whole mouth again a few times and rinsed with peroxide again every 10 minutes for the 45 minutes before the test. I was doing it in the car the whole way there and spitting in a cup. If this works, I’ll let ya know. I am a heavy, heavy smoker. I smoke all day everyday. Wish me luck.

Lowes interviews alot of pot heads…i have an interview with them friday morning…i smoke everyday with few exceptions and i last smoked this past saturday…im 6’2 225lbs but not in shape…not fat…but im no longer in football shape dig?…im not guna smoke between now and friday…and im guna eat the dick out of some Altoids and use a lot of mouth wash as well drink lots and lots of water..im also going to try to avoid contact between the swab and my cheek/tounge…ill try to remember to let you guys know how things go…thanks for all the suggestions and comments i feel alot better about this after reading the blog…
I had a test for lowes too but it has to have a certain amount of saliva on it or they “cancel” the test..im having to go back and retake it due to this :/

Probably. I did coke the night before and smoked a joint. Only the coke showed up on the swab test.
hey ppl i really need help on this i am having a drug test tomorow around 3:00pm Tuesday 08/03/2011 and i have smoked a ten bag yesterday im not a heavy smoker just now and again and im still in school i have drank around 4 pints of water and eaten healthy also i have bought some trebor spearmint i smoke backy around 12 fags a day would this make a diffrence i really do need help to pass please people and im defintley having a swab test
I’ve taken many swab tests. (atleast 1 yearly for 6yrs.) If your not over weight, have diabetes, and are in reasonably good shape and health 12 to 16 hours should be all you need to clear your spit. If you are in need of some piece of mind nicotine can throw off a test. Keep some nicotine gum or tablets. I recommend the tablets. Your less likely to mistakenly chew a tablet and out yourself trying to throw off a test. keep it in your mouth and let the nicotine laden spit get all over the swab. I recommend staying clean till your results come back however. The nicotine can render your test unreadable in which case they’ll be coming back for another one! And this time they’ll make sure you don’t have nicotine before hand SO MAKE SURE YOUR CLEAN!!! Oh yeah the other good thing about the tablets is you can swallow the spit without getting sick! Makes it a lot easier to hide. Good luck happy smoke signals!
